‘All the women that came before you knelt for me, Eva. It never was the other way around.’ His words echoed in her head over and over as she just stared back at him, completely lost for words to say.
A part of her was rejoicing. The thought that she was the one who could bring this male that was cream of the crop to his knees was just unbelievable to her. But there was also that other part of her that was just in utter disbelief. This confession of his was simply unreal to her. Or was she just so used to being neglected and being unwanted and uncared for, that everything this man does and says to her would overwhelm her to the point where she would always end up doubting if they were real or not?
“Now, go to sleep.” His tone turned a little commanding and he was about to walk away when Eva stopped him, grabbing onto his sleeve.
“Gage…” she held his gaze. Her voice turned soft and ever so calm. “How did you manage to deal with everything in just… several hours?”
He pressed his finger onto her moist and plump lips.
“All in due time… Eva. You can ask me anything later and I’ll answer, but that’s only if you behave yourself and rest. I need to go sign some urgent documents first.”
Not waiting for her response anymore, he stood and left her. But then he returned with a blanket draped over his one arm. Quietly, he unfolded it and gently put it over her and then touched her cheeks again. “Sleep, darling. I’ll wake you up once I’m done.”
When he left and Eva heard the quiet sound of him now flipping some documents, Eva let out a long sigh and lifted her hand to touch her forehead. Her heartbeats were racing. She really was not used to Gage being all serious like this. But more importantly, she was not used to having someone care for her so much to this extent. She was not used to getting treated so preciously like this…
While she laid there, she remembered those times when she would find herself waking up from passing out in her own office. Because despite being so unwell and knowing it, she still worked and worked so hard, neglecting her own health and wellbeing. And no one noticed… Hell, no one cared. And sadly, she was so used to it that she realized now how she even ended up treating herself as badly as others did.
Eva could not help but smirk when she remembered that time when she had a dinner date with Julian while she was feeling unwell. That entire time they were eating together, the man never even asked if she was fine. In fact, she was quite sure he did not even realize that his fiancée was ill. When their dinner was over, she asked him to drop her at the company. And when they got there, Julian leaned in to kiss her but Eva deflected it and stopped him. She told him that she had a slight fever and that she did not want him to catch it.
Only then did Julian reach out and touched her forehead. ‘You’re indeed hot.’ He had said but when Eva told him it was just a slight fever and that she would be fine once she took medication, Julian simply nodded at her. He did not even tell her not to go to work. He did not ask her to rest, even though he could already tell from that one touch that her fever was really high and far from being slight. But to her at that time, his reaction was normal. She had thought there was nothing wrong with his reaction at all. Because that was her normal treatment. That was how her so-called family had been treating her all these times.
Now here she was, lying on the sofa and being forced to rest just because of a slight fever. And to think that the man who was treating her like this, even looking somewhat upset and exasperated that she was refusing to rest, was someone who was nothing but a perfect stranger to her not too long ago.
Staring unseeingly at the ceiling for some time, Eva uttered his name in her mind before she eventually drifted off to sleep.
