Even in my youth, I rarely made characters directly for someone. One such exception was Phatman, the Mural Avenger, made for my friend Greg Burdett. He was into graffiti and skateboarding and hip hop like so many of us were in the mid-90s. We were quietly doing a rendition of Cypress Hill’s Insane in the Brain just moments before he got kicked out of school for trumped up charges of tagging a bathroom stall. (Cops comin’ in to snatch my crops indeed.) Didn’t get to graduate with him, but he came to visit a mutual friend in college once. That was maybe 1997 or 98. That would be the last time I’d see him. Found out he died this morning. RIP Gregory Maxim Burd— hold up, your middle name was Maxim?! How the fuck did I never know this until now?

Life can be very bittersweet sometimes. I was real happy to see some art done for someone from the past, especially when you were a kid, but it of course ended sadly for Gregory. At least he's definitely not going to be forgotten.
