It’s done! When I was first tasked with this commission, the story prompts were that the guy (Ralph) had a thing for his tomboyish friend (Fran). I modeled Fran after PJ Soles’ character in Brian DePalma’s Carrie. While looking for reference, I found an article (which I’d link if I weren’t lazy) describing her as sort of a gay icon. (The article does acknowledge that she’s still one of Carrie’s bullies and an awful person.) This made for a handy justification for Fran falling instantly for the transformed Raphaela. The sceptre already does enough by turning Ralph into royalty. It doesn’t need to have a love spell side effect; Fran’s already a lesbian.

As for Ralph carrying a torch for his friend whom he knows is gay? I dunno, I didn’t want to get into it that much. I was hoping to cram as much characterization as I could into a single page via expressions and mannerisms. I didn’t want to get into Chasing Amy territory if I could help it. Who knows, maybe Ralph is non-binary. I mean, look at that haircut. (Plz don’t cancel me, I’m typing this late at night.)
