Earth Household

from the album Darn Floor - Big Bite

Words by Terry Taylor
Music by Terry Taylor, Tim Chandler, and Greg Flesch
©1987 Broken Songs (ASCAP)

Sleeping by the hearth of the earth household
Content and relaxed before the fire of life
It's becoming like a castle all woven of mist
Disintegrating when I want to grab a hold

Struggle to go somewhere beyond
The earth household, the earth household
Go to the other unknowable side
Of the earth household, the earth household

We chase with the hounds for the meaning of the world
The unattainable meaning of the world
Now I'm gonna run to the other side
Beyond the border land of death I ride

Slip through a tear in the fabric of the world
The earth household, the earth household
Speak the foreign language of a place beyond
The earth household, the earth household

I drink you endlessly toward my hollow heart
And wake at night repeating "How strange, how strange!"
All is touch and vision in a passionate kiss
And life's a drab curtain ready to be raised

Struggle to go somewhere beyond
The earth household, the earth household
Go to the other unknowable side
Of the earth household, the earth household

The earth household, the earth household

We chase with the hounds for the meaning of the world...

guitar and vocals: T.S. Taylor

note:

“…and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in  Christ Jesus.”

Ephesians 2:6

Inspired by the poetry of Czeslaw Milosz, "The Earth Household" borrows fragments of Milosz’s imagery and builds upon it to express a yearning for the Beloved and the desire to transcend earthly intellectual, physical, and spiritual limitations. The song envisions a future in which we will no longer see through a glass darkly, but will at last be made whole and “seated in heavenly places” in the full presence of our Lord and redeemer.

Thanks for this. I've always appreciated the mystical, meditative quality of this song, and it's grown on me over the years. This new version maintains that feeling of thoughtful meditation - the wonder of the spiritual, heavenly world that sometimes intersects with our senses in this earthly place we are living in. Thanks so much for these personal takes on your songs - it really adds to my appreciation of your music!
