thanks for more Korra, Don! Love Book 3. And not a spoiler, since it was shown earlier this season - Khazan is an earthbender, so lavabending is something you can do with earth but Roku in the first season of Avatar showed us that you could also lavabend with firebending, so it looks like its possible for either.

Lavabending is not a sub bending of fire. It is a specialized sub-skill of earthbending that allows the user to manipulate molten earth. Basically like what waterbenders can do with ice and water.

The were three instances where we saw people bend lava in The Last Airbender. All of them where avatars in the avatar state. There's no reason to assume Roku used fire for that, he was fully realized avatar.

when Roku was talking about the positive side of the avatar state in season 2 it showed one of the previous firebending avatars making a volcano erupt

Maybe for lavabending you need to have bending relatives from fire and earth nation and you need to be fire or earth bender. Or you need to be avatar to have both fire and earth bending 🤔 Im not trying to prove anything im just thinking

every water bender can make ice but not every earth bender can bend lava or metal 🤷🏻‍♀️

Combustion and lightning(redirection + control are considered separate) are both fire. Water has healing, plants in the swamp tribe, and bloodbending. Earth has lava, metal, and sand. Air has spiritual projection, flight, and can create a vacuum within a person's lungs to suffocate people(not a sub-skill persay, used by the previous airbending Avatar)

I'm not sure why aang never learned metalbeanding, Toph said in the comics that he didn't have the stomach for it. It makes more sense for an avatar like Korra to get it right away
