People have done test on the boyancy of a door and how far "out of the ice water" you would have to be to survive tell rescue and have concluded they would have fit BUT the door would have sunk into the water to far for rescue to arrive before they both died to hypothermia

Real question is how did Jack realize it at the time, not knowing the multiple factors like time of rescue / heat loss / water flow direction/ ect...

He just knew the door was going to sink if he was on it cause it was tilting in the water when he was holding on to rose of course he didn’t know none of that other stuff he just sacrificed himself so she has a higher chance at surviving until help came
