Without the core, nothing is providing the power needed to keep Genos' brain alive. No synthetic blood (or whatever is being used) to provide necessary oxygen means complete brain death inside of a few minutes. I'm also nursing a fan-theory that Genos is actually a robotic creation with false memories, but that's just me.
