Around the viking times people didn't exactly have last names so they were known as their name son of their fathers name etc. which was also often pronounced as fathers name + son. E.g. Thor Odinson is Thor son of Odin. This is why when Thor speaks to Agent Coulson he says "know this son of Coul" because Thor thinks he is the son of Coul which isn't the case it's just his name.

I will update this comment as I progress through the movie: Thor is of Norse mythology which used to be Viking but now is referred to as Norse. Viking is just a catch all term. Bro forget the horses. Lol. Traditionally the Norse gods rode horses in their mythology. Odin has an 8 legged horse called Sleipnir. So them having horses is in keeping with the mythology.
