Hi Juli I loved your reaction and analysis of the movie. Ultimately I think this is a movie about repression and how denying who you really are can have devastating affects. In terms of whether or not Anja loves her I think believing that Thelma controls her feelings is a trap that the writer/director wants you to fall for but if you look deeper at the message and what happens in the film it becomes obvious (to me at least) that Anja loves Thelma on her own free will. If Thelma were able to make people love her wouldn’t she make her parents love her more? They fear her and in the end commit themselves to killing her. I doubt any kid wants that and since according to Trond she makes what she wants happen wouldn’t she have done so? Also the central message is about self acceptance and Trond’s words about how evil Thelma’s powers and her love for Anja are is opposite to the theme. I think that Thelma can only manipulate physical realities, not emotions. This is a good analysis for anyone who wants to read: https://thelma2017dirjoachimtrier.tumblr.com/post/178633525144/hey-i-saw-many-of-your-posts-about-thelma-after
