I've recently decided to dial back the number of commissions I take on (by raising my rates to a point that I'm assuming almost nobody will go for). When I first started doing them, my Patreon was brand new, like only making a couple hundred a month, and I took on comms to try and make a bit more money. They were just like additional stories that'd sometimes pop up every now and then. But over the last 6 months my queue has been constantly several people full, and I'm sure y'all might've noticed. Less of the stories that probably got you to subscribe in the first place, more stuff that's only a few chapters long.

Fast forward to now, and I have two long-term commissions (Mason and Truth or Dare), with a third I'll be starting later this month that'll potentially become long-term too. And I had the epiphany last month that I could just stop taking on new commissions. Initially I might make a couple hundred dollars less a month, but it'll be less stress on my end not having a never-ending queue, and less stress means higher writing output, which might even mean the Patreon grows a little bit. But even if I make a little less, it might be worth it to be less stressed and write more of what I like.

Also, when I resell the monthly exclusives on Gumroad, they usually make a couple hundred bucks each. So they could kinda be like a replacement for the money I made from comms, except it's kinda better for my patrons because I'm less restricted with the stories so they get written faster and often end up longer! And if I'm wrong, and my income starts struggling, then I'll just lower my rates and start writing comms again. But hopefully I'll be able to survive without relying on them.

Anyways, to anyone who's commissioned from me in the past, don't feel bad or anything lol. It's not any one story, it's the collection of a lot of stories. Returning to HTTYD a few weeks ago kinda lit a spark, so I wanna go back to a schedule of writing more stuff like that, like I used to (which also means finally finding the time to update httyB)

also, completely unrelated to any of the above but technically also an update, Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games ever, so since there is a sequel coming out next week I might accidentally play that all day for several days 🙃 will it impact my output? hopefully not but i'll try to finish some chapters beforehand to publish while i'm busy becoming a gamer!

This is great news. Funny that mason is a commission, it’s honestly one of my faves rn. So long as it’s building to something that it’s been hinting at for awhile. Also excited to see the next version of HTTYB, after the current one is finished ofc. Just finished Jedi survivor, so my wife has dibs on Tears of the Kingdom.

Hope all is well. Do you plan on returning to HTTYB and Mason anytime soon? Just trying to figure out if I should keep my subscription or not
