In order to achieve that level of performance, the internet connection between the nodes needs to be insanely fast and incredibly reliable. 25 Gbps between nodes spread across the world is simply not possible. Perhaps it will work with nodes being located in datacenters but that just means one big centralised system no different to a centralised database.

Hardware development is not stagnating; in time just dirty iron rigs can handle nodes 🙃 besides it is already cheapish to run a rig.
