I find your interpretation of the Ood as monks to be fascinating. I always saw them as being taken over more so than religiously driven, i suppose if you had a voice in your head telling you to do things it could be seen as "god" speaking to you

It was definitely my first thought and it fits in nicely with the religious overtones of the episode. Although, it is certainly more being taken over than anything else.
