This episode was fairly popular at the time, but the fans have gradually turned on it over the years. After Maureen Lipman had been doing such a great affable TV host performance that makes the Wire all the creepier, it’s tremendously jarring when during the climax she can suddenly only shout “I’m hungry!” in the hammiest way possible. As shocking as it initially is when Rose gets face-wiped, it also removes all tension from that part of the story as it’s now inevitable that some way to reverse it will be discovered, plus it robs us of Billie Piper for the whole second half after she’d been giving one of her most fun and energetic performances. And for all the unfair criticisms of Rose that have racked up over the years, for my money she’s at her absolute worst when she pressures Tommy to forgive his worthless, abusive father just because of her own daddy issues. Mark Gatiss has come to deeply regret writing the scene that way, and several things he’s done since have gone a bit out of their way to make clear that he believes people have every right to cut harmful, toxic relatives out of their lives completely. He’s also pointed out that Tommy was only meant to be helping Eddie carry his bags to the train rather than undoing his mother kicking the bastard out, like quite a few fans got the impression was happening.

Glad he kind of explained his intention and has attempted to make other stories to correct the wrong. Thanks for sharing!

Hold on to your shorts - the next one is a bit scarier! Definitely not the scariest - can't wait for those episodes in future seasons! But the next one is a bit creepy and has some interesting theology in it.

I was thinking about this episode from a soldier's standpoint and what the father may have been going through. When I got back from my first tour in Iraq (Aug 03-Aug 04) . I went through some type of change we now know as PTSD. We actually have help and doctors that know how to treat it now. The father who turned in his wife could have been dealing with that also. I'm amazed at how that generation made it through after WWII. I also notice the year of that ceremony, 1953. The Americans was fighting in Korea at that time. This episode bought up a lot of memories for me.
