WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! Holy heartbreak this was a great episode that left me breathless, yet a strong lingering suspicion that the story isn’t over despite what I just saw.

This episode was naturally quite a shock, and a lot of fans were insisting it had to be some kind of trick. But then Katee Sackhoff herself made a public statement that Starbuck really was gone for good, which she was quite visibly pissed off about. Ron Moore followed by assuring the fans that despite how out of nowhere it seemed given her importance up until now, he did have big ideas for the show's future that required her death, and he hoped we'd think the loss was worth it. Naturally, there was a pretty heavy split among us when we did see what those plans were, and I truly have no idea which side you'll be on, so that's something to look forward to.

Some behind-the-scenes stuff unrelated to the fandom-splitting climax of the episode: Adama's destruction of the model ship was not in the script; it was improvised by Edward James Olmos on the day. He was so in the moment and so wrecked by the loss of Starbuck that he just tore it apart. The only problem -- that was a museum-quality model they'd rented for the shoot, valued at several hundred thousand dollars. If you want to hear Ron Moore's "podcast" (more of a commentary track) for Maelstrom (he watches the episode and talks about what's on the screen, so no spoilers), it's archived here: https://web.archive.org/web/20090303214227/http://media.scifi.com/battlestar/downloads/podcast/mp3/317/bsg_ep317_FULL.mp3 -- the bit about EJO ripping the model apart, and the production team's reaction, starts around 41:45. (The woman he's talking to is his wife, Terry, who occasionally joined him while he was recording commentaries.)
