Part of why I love The Big Lebowski is that it is both in conversation with the history of noir film, but at the same time is a satire of noir. All of the little things that became tropes in noir get turned on their head in Lebowski. My favorite is the notepad bit -- usually you'd have the detective using a pencil to carefully shade the piece of paper that was *just below* whatever piece of paper the suspect (or victim) had written important information on, and they'd be able to read the imprint and get the info. Finding out what The Dude is doing with the notepad in this film is just a perfect reveal -- it's so stupid but so in character. He's the worst noir detective ever, and that's saying something.

OK I now need a list of the worst noir detectives in history ;) The Dude is something else, that's for sure. He has his own methods, but it kind of all worked out, from a certain point of view.
