What show makes THE END OF THE WORLD its SECOND EPISODE?! An imaginative show with a different take on the world's end. So much fun, and surprisingly to me a good amount of emotion as well!

*edit* Unfortunately, my blu-ray runs the NTSC version of the episode which runs 4% slower than the streaming version so if you're watching on streaming it does not stay in sync. I'm truly sorry about that! I switch to the streaming version on episode 7.

For its first several years, the original show was completely vague about the Doctor's origins beyond him just being an alien. Then when the original actor William Hartnell developed serious health issues and needed to be replaced, they introduced the concept of his species having "regeneration" that can completely change his appearance, and from there started building more and more about the Time Lords. Oh, and the Time Lords were actually still around throughout the whole classic series, with several stories even being set on their planet Gallifrey. So it was a TREMENDOUS risk for the new series to start out by revealing the planet was destroyed in a war and the Doctor was the only Time Lord left. Just imagine if a relaunch of Battlestar Galactica started now, but the first episode was just Adama introducing himself to a bunch of new characters, and then the second episode ended with him revealing literally everyone else from the old show was long dead. That's about the same level as this was, and a lot of old fans were understandably furious. But plenty more were on board with the idea and willing to see what effect it would have, and apparently it worked out because the show is still going strong.

oh wow! As a newcomer I love it. Engaging gives emotional stakes to the character and I think it's a nice continuation from the original series-- but I could see someone with an emotional attachment to what came before not seeing it as an unnecessary "twist" and being annoyed.
