Welcome to scream week! Everyday this week we’ll be watching an installment of the scream franchise.

I set out to rewatch this series only to realize how little I truly remembered. There are 9 killers across the first 5 films and I happened to remember only 3 of them. It's kind of embarrassing actually 🤣

Even in this first one there is so much more to it than I thought! It succeeds in some genuine frights as well as keeping the mind engaged in not only the case, but horror film tropes as well. I had a great time watching Scream.

I remembered essentially nothing about the next two installments so I’m so excited to dive in to those.

*I watched this on paramount plus.

Yay!!! My fave franchise. I might have already said this. Growing up we were sheltered, but not. Obviously not allowed to see horror movies, but we could see things and go to concerts while some of my friends could not. I always told my parents they had a great balance with us growing up. So when this came out I was fresh out of high school by 2 years (yes I am dating myself) and thought I would go with a friend. So I have had no prior exposure to horror films except what I would catch on TV (and then promptly turn off). That opening scene with Drew. I never knew I could get so scared from a movie. I told my friend "I want to go!!!". But I am glad I stayed. The humor helped me deal with it. Now I am quite desensitized LOL. But I have such love for this franchise. And I am soooo happy the new movies still repsect the original ones and fans!

Oh man to see this before any other horror film must have been an experience! Definitely way scarier that way, but pretty cool! I bet you love it even more now with a richer horror background lol. Yes, the new movies introducing the concept of the requel was perfect! I can't wait to share my reaction to 5 & 6 especially and why I'm so nervous about a potential 7th,'

Ryan

I was late to start watching this franchise, only being 12 years old when this one came out and not much interested in the genre at the time. And my big regret is that I couldn't experience the intended reaction to that opening sequence. Drew Barrymore was initially offered the role of Sidney, having just started to come out of a period where she did a truly shocking amount of drugs for her young age even by modern standards (unfortunately something that runs in her family, as her father and grandfather were both notorious for destroying their promising acting careers with their drug addictions). But after reading the script, she suggested she should instead play the opening victim so that her death would be a huge shock, sacrificing a potential franchise lead role for what was better for the movie. And the advertising was happy to play along, always acting like Barrymore was a major character on the same level as the others. And it worked beautifully, with that opening instantly being the part that people talked about the most, especially noting how it could easily stand on its own as a self-contained short film. Barrymore's performance combined with Craven's stellar direction honed over decades of horror films (who would have thought that Jiffy Pop could be so effective at building tension?) still makes the whole thing a banger today. And then the rest of the movie is pretty darn great too, so that it's no surprise it took off into an ongoing series. Which has certainly had its ups and downs, but thankfully more of the former. I look forward to discussing them all here.

Yes! It was a brilliant move having that opening play out the way it did! I'm so glad the marketing team played along, because I'm not 100% sure that would happen today. 😅
