A South Korean monster film from the director of Parasite! I loved how the creature and political commentary were the backdrop for one family's fight to save a child.

1. The formaldehyde incident did happened irl. https://www.nytimes.com/2000/07/15/news/us-dumping-of-chemical-riles-koreans.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare 2. Agent Yellow is modeled after chemical defoliant named Agent Orange, which were in use during the Vietnam war. USFK(United States Forces Korea) dumped bunch of chemicals illegally in Korean soil, include agent orange. https://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/479264.html 3. At the end of the movie, senator on TV admits that there was no virus whatsoever, and they were misled by misinformation. Which is direct quotation explaining there were no WMD in Iraq, but US invaded Iraq anyway. https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2011/feb/15/defector-admits-wmd-lies-iraq-war 4. These facts might make the movie looks like anti-america propaganda, but it’s not. It’s rather a satire towards South Korean society in general. Corrupt officials, police disregarding citizens, can’t say no to US… Director Bong once explained the meaning of the English title ‘The Host’. If my memory is correct, he said the Korean society itself is the host of the irony and the tragedy. 5. As a Korean, I would love to see you explore more Korean Cinema. Thank you for your reaction.
