This movie caused one of the most controversial Oscars ever, as it was nominated for eleven awards...which didn't include Spielberg as Best Director. Many questioned how the Academy voters could possibly consider the movie that deserving without the director also getting a nomination, and many accused it of being sour grapes after Spielberg had spent a decade being looked down on as a populist commercial director, and now had proved he could do an "Oscar Bait" movie and still be just as successful. Then it got even worse when the film didn't win a single one of those eleven nominations.

It's wild to be nominated in so many categories and walk away with nothing. I would have never guessed that would happen, certainly not to a film like this.
