This is a zombie classic! It was everything I wanted. I especially loved the real time mechanics of the film! Next up Shaun of the Dead!

*Since this is public domain I've included the full film in this edit! You can also watch the traditional watch along version here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/62355299

Michael Nolan

If you dont mind me weighing in on this, This was the first modern "zombie" movie, in fact the word "zombie" is not used. Even the prduction staff called the creatures "ghouls". Some of what came to be classic zombie movie tropes were still not established yet. Thus the very first ghoul we see understands how car doors work, moves to try the door on the opposite side of the car, then looks around for a brick to smash the window. To Romero, this was primarily a sociological thriller. This was one of the first movies with a mostly white cast and a black protaganist. For Romero this was an entirely survivable situation if the characters worked together. The fact that they brought out the worst in each other was what doomed them. The other Romero movies are well worth a look, as is the 1990 Tom Savini remake of "Night". It stars Tony Todd and progresses slightly differently.

I did notice they never used the word zombies. I thought it was funny when they called them ghouls because I don’t hear the word very often. I was also impressed when he tried to open the door. Haha. I love the sociological aspects of this. That’s brilliant. I could see this being survivable has they worked as a team. Such a shame they didn’t go that route. Definitely hope to one day check out all of the other films!

To answer: I Walked With a Zombie, The Last Man in Earth, I Bury The Living, and The Plague of Zombies all predate Night...but they're all *meh*

However The Return of the Living Dead (1985) directed by the writer of Alien is THE punk rock, zombie comedy. Competes with Shaun in the hearts (brains? BRAINS!) of zombie lovers.
