Another home run! I absolutely loved the vibe of this episode. It was a simple mystery, with a nice mix of quirky and dramatic, but the characterization was out this world

yes!!!! this is my favourite episode of the first season and I just love everything about it - the characterisation feels so wonderfully and heartbreakingly naturalistic and likeable with excellent themes and ideas, and a lovely Bowie soundtrack. It has some absolutely wonderful dialogue too - “All those years I'd believed my dad had gone to America because I was a failure. And here he was, all along, doing his important secret work in Filey Road, Cardiff. When I found him, I couldn't even bear to say hello. I'd spent my life believing in stupid stories, fantasies. I've wasted my life. Once I'd seen him there, everything I'd dreamed about was like rubbish, it was just a crock of shit, including the Eye. So why not sell it? Along with the woodworm treatment and loft insulation, and all the other crap floating round the world. Linda was welcome to the money.”

When I was younger too, this episode resonated with me so much because I felt so connected and similar to Eugene - waffling away my youth and teen years in daydreams of something greater.

I really loved this episode. I didn't continue watching the show after the pilot aired, but when this one aired a lot of my friends told me I would really love it and it wasn't Owen-heavy. I'm glad I did, as it brought me back to watching Torchwood. I was lucky to have friends who would tell me which episodes between the pilot and this one were okay for me to watch. Owen is still not my guy and that won't change, but I like the rest of the characters enough, and I liked the storytelling enough, to give it a second shot.
