Earlier this month I managed to take a few days to do some visual novel work! For a while I'd been meaning to spruce up Haruka's (the heroine) design, and I got to do that.

I liked the old design a lot, but there were a few things that nagged me that I wanted to improve:

  • Her hair was too asymmetrical. It looked good from this angle, but weird from others, and the hair clip seemed like a bit of over-designing.

  • Her clothes weren't feminine enough. Fashion's never been my forte, but I wanted something more appropriate. Something tomboyish and cute and practical, kind of with a surfer girl vibe.

  • I wanted to make her gesture more solid, and figure out a second pose. The idea was always to have 2 poses and have the facial gestures split between the two for more variety.

After a few days of experimenting and simmering (and lots of time researching), I have come up with this, which I'm super stoked about! I think the hair accomplished all my goals; it ended up becoming a bit shorter, but I quite like this too. And the clothing colors are way different, but much more solid now. I hope you guys love her as much as I do.

Still not going to do full production on this yet. I want to make some progress on the backgrounds first, and leave the fancy new sprites for after. To that end I've been poking at Blender but this program is so complex, aaaa. I'll keep you guys tuned.

I hope that was interesting. Look out for more VN dev logs when I'm able to do more work on it. ❤
