I still not satisfied with the background design in the previous post. It has no story, no characteristic on it. So I redoing it again, more planning this time.

I came up with the idea and situation to help with the mood I want; Big bad wolf Hank found a red rising hood lost in the woods.

A thumbnail sketches of the idea. Now I know the setting will be in the deep forest. No sky to be found and it must looks gritty, dirty or even dark, with lush of green and brown color everywhere.

A clean up of Hank and Red Riding Hood. I won't do the super clean up since I want them to looks a bit rough and gritty as well. The colors are also challenge since they feature almost everything red, white and black. Only the basket and Hank's eyes that are a bit bright wash out yellow/brown.

Sketch time!

It's so easy to sketch when you know exactly what the idea is XD. I give them a bit of a deep volume by using the different size of the trees to separate the dimension. The one near Hank is the biggest, then the one next to the Red Riding Hood, and the rest.

The clean up is not too clean, just like the characters. I use Disney's 101 Dalmatians background painting for an inspiration. They also a xerox of a very details BG drawing and paint under it with a very subtle and an easy shapes.

What a handsome film! I need that XD

Coloring time!

Color sketches to help seeing whole picture easier. The colors are mostly lush and green like I wanted. The deeper the forest is they will fasing a bit into blue and light yellow to help pushing the characters and the front BG more.

Voilà!!

I found a brush that help make the color looks a bit more gritty have a texture like watercolor, perfect! I also added some orange tint here and ther to help bring the life up for the environment. Also it help make the style looks gritty like a rust too <3

The good BG will have a characteristic that goes well with the characters and I think I got it now. The whole thing loosk like it came from the same place, same aesthetic and atmosphere. I'm super satisfied now and can't wait to make an anim short out of them!
