Forgot about some points, but after rewatching your reaction of this episode, I have some little things to add (don't worry, there's no spoiler in that incredibly long comment) : - Jody, Akai and James are from the FBI, not the CIA. - You're right that Akai is a smart guy, but don't forget you compare Akai to Conan. - Jody is also a competent agent, but she's not as smart as Akai or Conan (and that's why she trusts Conan's intelligence so much). -James, even if he's not as intelligent as Akai and Conan, he's a competent leader, able to read fast a situation with few informations and capable of taking quick decisions (like when he was kidnapped in the episode where he was introduced). - And finally, Shuichi Akai is a wild card that does everything he wants as he wants (episode 345 and 425). Even as intelligent as he is, he's not the best person to take command, James is better suited for that role. About Gin : _ I said it in a comment long ago, but Gin is in the top 3 of the scariest character in Detective Conan (the number one being Conan himself). Gin doesn't appear much, but when he's onscreen, you know shit will happen. At this point, Conan was nearly killed by him twice already (and the second one was reaaally close). - Gin has no romantic relation with Haibara... buuuut for some reason each time he thinks about her he sees her naked (yes it's creepy, since she's barely major). Last thing about this arc (and I stop my looong comment, I promise) : - Akai means red in japanese. Red vs Black clash actually means : Akai VS Black Organisation

You didn't notice where Akai looking at the last massage from her girlfriend there is a ps in the massage, which is a foreshadowing.
