it's not related to initial D at all, though it has a lot in common. Takumi's car and driving style focuses mainly on the corners, because they drive on the mountain passes with barely any cars around. Wangan Midnight focuses on the Tokyo C1 Expressway, and in particular the Wangan route, which is best for top speed. Need for Speed is a good comparison. The music is pretty good, but not quite as good as Initial D's eurobeat, though the outro song is great. Akio starts out not knowing much but progresses a lot. and there is some romance
