Maybe it's my old cynisism or Alley's young naivety, but for someone who has a degree in psychology, she sure seems surprised at how humans suck sometimes.

I think it's more the surprise of the show actually going there than the fact that humans sometimes do. And the fact that it's about characters you've come to know, and if you like them, you don't want those things to happen to them.
