Lorne brings up his clan's ability to survive decapitation, provided their bodies aren't mutilation. You'd think Fred would remember that, although she probably did, but was desperate. ... My favorite part of this episode is seeing the Angel Investigations team functioning as a cohesive demon-destroying unit. ... Fred becomes John Nada towards the end, there.

Dana

Google is your friend. "John Nada was a homeless drifter who lived in Los Angeles for a period of time. He is the main protagonist of the film They Live."

Jasmine is when I tune back into Angel season 4. Birth pains indeed, this season

I do like the revelation that when Angel went to the trials to save Darla and they wouldn't save her, that he was still owed a life and that that life was Conner. But I wish we would have been told this sooner, it's been so long since that episode that you almost forgets it happens. Maybe not on a binge watch, but 2 seasons later is two years later when originally watching it.

Dave Ford

Great episode in my opinion - but then I think Philip Kaufman's remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is one of the best movies made in thw 70s - well worth adding to anyone's watchlist

Koz

Well, yes, I meant that Fred was like Roddy Piper's Nada character; the only person in the world who knows the truth, who can see what is really an ugly monster, and has to fight this powerful evil.

I almost never agree with IMDb ratings and that’s not changing here. This is not the weakest episode of the season so far, as the IMDb rating suggests. The storytelling in this episode is so much better than that demonstrated by the first two-thirds of the season. The writing here is intentional, purposeful, and filled with meaning. This is the beginning of an actual story arc. Not just “birth pains”. I am not even remotely a fan of the journey the writing took to get us here. So much of it wasn't actually *needed* for the plot to reach this point and to suggest that everything happened specifically to get us to this point was nonsensical - and Wesley’s “birth pains” line is another hand wave attempt by the writers to excuse aspects of their storytelling that doesn’t hold up when looked at too closely - but with all that said; I absolutely love it here. This is how to write about the concept of free will.

Yea a lot of ppl just despise this season... I believe those people are wrong. I love this arc, including this episode.

If I were a god I'd make everyone call me Patchouli

Season 4 is way more of a marathon to get through with rewatches for me. There is usually so much good stuff mixed in with stuff I don't care for. The set up this episode for Jasmine and Fred's role are much definitely in the positive column for the season for me.

Ron Fehr

Along with the Cordy/Connor thing, Jasmine was another reason I didn't care much for this season of Angel.

ahmad

Gina Torres is great in this role imo and the arc is really fun.

Ron Fehr

Yes, she was good in the role. I just didn't like her character. So much so that I don't care to see the Jasmine episodes.

Mitch M

I love S4. It does such a creepy, compelling, grotesque job of exploring the difference between fate (as created by a higher power) and free will. The whole Buffyverse really is just an exploration of the meaning we create when we choose for ourselves, so it’s definitely not an accident that Angel’s first words to Jasmine were “oh my God,” as he falls to his knees. I find it fascinating the way this episode begins to tease out the difference between choosing to be good and being forced to be good by a higher power.

Pat S

It's Sam Witwer and Annie Wersching! Didn't remember they made an appearance in this episode.

John Alexander

There's no such thing as good or bad taste, just different taste. Good taste is a lie clung to by people who need some way to feel superior.

Will and Kim

Something something Biblically Accurate Angels.
