4x10: "Awakening"

One of my favorite moments ever in TV viewing...my Angel crew back in the day were FLOORED I tell you...

Wait… actual character development? Must be a dream. I should be able to appreciate this episode as a depiction of Angel’s desires, but for me it just plays like the worst kind of filler. The worst because they progress a lot of the characters more throughout this episode than they have in quite a long time, but none of that development will stick because none of it actually happened. In my opinion there have been a couple far more successful self-erasing episodes in the so-called "Buffyverse": "The Wish" episode of BtVS didn't provide any character development but instead showed us, the audience, a world where Buffy had never gone to Sunnydale. So when Buffy doubts her effectiveness we know that she is wrong to do so. While Angel's "I Will Remember You" does develop Angel, by allowing him to remember everything that happened and having to live with that memory, it also subtly develops Buffy because seeing as she didn't remember the experience it negatively impacted their relationship for when she returned later that season. I’d rather not have the fake development that this episode offers, not if we’re just going to go right back to where we were. Particularly back to the Cordy and especially Connor that we’ve been getting all season so far. I do love Angel saying Buffy’s name though. That was a nice touch. By the way, if these developments had actually taken place, perhaps over a three episode arc, I would be completely on board.

This episode is so good I was fooled right up until the beast was defeated and then i was like hang on a minute like with most people it just felt to good to be true, this episode just gets better on rewatches because you know its fake heartbroken all of the cordelia and angel moments were fake though

It's worth noting how little it actually takes for Wes & Angel to reconcile as well - Angel grins like a schoolboy at the slightest sincere apology. The thing is that real Wes will never be sincerely apologetic since he still thinks his actions were justified at the time.

Love the episode, but it's unfortunate that Gwen vanished off-screen. It makes sense in context, but I wish we got more (and she didn't even zap anyone last episode!)

I don’t remember a lot about my first watch through of these shows because it was so long ago and I’ve since rewatched countless times, but I remember the shock at the end of this episode. I remember yelling when Cordy and Angel started kissing WHAT ARE YOU DOING DID YOU FORGET THE CURSE and then that ending 🤯 In retrospect of course they’re not going to build this up just to not have Angelus appear in person. I LOVE the next stretch of episodes, let’s gooooo!!!!

I always figured that Jenny's re-curse that Willow performed perhaps didn't have that "true happiness" stipulation and it always bothered me that everyone just associated sex with happiness

It's very fun noticing stuff on rewatches. I only just realised during this reaction that part of Angel's hypothetical "true happiness" was Wesley apologising to him, and Wesley and Gunn being bros again! This season continues to be WAY better than I remembered it being, I'm having a blast. (Ignoring the C/C in the room, of course...)

I like how Connor is still an absolute shithead for most of the dream sequence, even though it would make everyone happier if he weren't, because that's what Angel knows him as and it would sound too many alarms for us (and maybe even for Angel) if Connor was, like, generally more pleasant. And then Connor just turns on a dime and gives Angel the affirmations and closure Angel needs for almost no reason, because in reality Angel has no idea what Connor needs to actually heal and not be such a shithead.

Yup it was Angel's perfect day to make him happy. Everything got resolved. Wes and Gunn made up, Angel and Connor bonded, The Beast was destroyed, and Angel got Cordelia....perfect happiness. Everything that was bothering Angel in his life got resolved.
