One of my favourites of the season. Button, button... who's got the button?

The worst thing about Gnarl for me isn't the way he looks or acts but the way he talks. I feel dirty and disgusting everytime I hear it.

Oxmustube

I always thought of Rashomon while watching this episode, but now I feel it's closer to The Killing, a Kubrick film. Once again proving that the Buffyverse is where taking chances is the mission.

When Spike asks for a word that means "glowing" that has to rhyme, it's "effulgent" - the poem he was writing just before he was sired by Dru.

Alley forgetting half the stuff Willow did at the end of s6. Hope Willow didn't cast a memory spell.... Jane Espenson's writing has always been great and funny, but over the show I think it got deeper and more layered. There's a lot of layers of meaning to many of the lines this episode. Spike: "You go off and try to wall up the bad parts and put your heart back in where it fell out. You call yourself finished, but you're not. Worse than ever, you are." Willow: "it hurts too much not to try" I love the scene where Spike's talking to both Willow and Buffy/Xander in the basement. Your reaction to it was great. While he was alive, I was really worried about Gnarl's cholesterol level "You're gonna think about that later, mister, and you're gonna laugh."

Alley playing with her necklace while failing to remember what the spell was for was hilariously ironic.

Back during the original broadcast, the promos for this episode during the week before it were clips of the Gnarl with the caption "Ewww! Ewww! Ewww!" flashing on the screen. Yeah. Quite apt.

Definitely one of my favorite episodes of this season. So many things hit so well - I loved loved loved Anya and Willow bonding (and even a tiny bit of flirting on Anya's part), Dawn rocking research mode and also being all around fun, Spike what'ing in the whatment, and especially the scene in the cave. Made me cry more than once...'they didn't leave me? don't go away!' Willow is my favorite of my many BTvS favorites; Alyson H. is brilliant at wrenching the heart strings.

Always wanted to do this for Halloween. Creature design on point.

Ron Fehr

Devoted Buffy watchers hopefully thought of that, but it's good that you mentioned it.

If I recall, the actor Camden Toy, who played Gnarl, was also one of the Gentlemen in season four's episode Hush.

Steven morgan

Don’t be embarrassed that you didn’t get the 10:41 thing, you’re brain focuses on quite a lot so little things sometimes confuse

Ron Fehr

It was simply to let us know that the events happening to Willow were happening at the exact same time as Buffy, Xander and Dawn.

Steven morgan

I know I was explaining that when your lookin at the bigger picture as ally does, sometimes you miss the obvious because your thinking bigger

Rio de Tanana

Tbh, I think they realized that they had to ditch the “Willow’s a junkie” story line if her magic was going to be needed later in the season.

Ron Fehr

Thanks for clarify your intention. I kind of assumed that's what you were saying.

kelly mc

That he was. The main guy, really tall one, was Doug Jones. Camden was the second main Gentleman

Marie Green

There was also a clip of Spike saying, "Well, who doesn't like skin?" which sadly never appeared in the episode.

FernWithy

Maybe also because it was such a loathed storyline that they wanted to dispatch it as soon as possible? (I don't seem to have a link to the actual reaction, so I'm not sure what Alley said here.)
