I suspect I am going to be in quite the minority, but I totally understood and felt for Spike and Anya here. I don’t ship them at all but I’m surprised at how little I minded them hooking up. A lot of their scene before they waxed the table was actually pretty sweet. At the very least, this random hook up did not fill me with complete revulsion like Willow & Xander smooching did. I do love Xander and I feel for him overall but in this episode? Not so much. He hurt Anya so bad and publicly humiliated her on top of it, destroying what should’ve been one of the happiest days of her life. And then he has the nerve to get all butt hurt and goes right back to his old habit of being a jealous little brat complete with insults. Not about it. Time for him to deal with some consequences of his actions. At least the end with Willow and Tara made me so very very happy. I adore them so much.I also have to shout out Dawn in this episode; she is really maturing so much and I’ve always had a huge soft spot for her.

So, Xander. His first mistake was proposing when he wasn't really ready. His second mistake was not talking to Anya at whatever point he started to realize he wasn't ready. By the time he left her at the altar, as awful as that was, it was the lesser of two evils given the first two mistakes. His third mistake was not realizing that any hope he has of preserving the relationship after that ought to be *extremely* tentative, to say the least. Anya's 3000% right when she says she doesn't owe him anything. But those mistakes are all understandable. He proposed to the woman he loved, hoped his insecurities would go away so he didn't have to worry her about them, and hoped to preserve their relationship. That third mistake in particular is easily reinforced by the fact that Anya's first conversation with him in this episode is "do you still want to get married". In Xander's head, that puts them on the same page of still loving each other and being a couple, but still working through the trauma of the wedding incident and figuring out what's next. So when he sees her with Spike, easily the 'person' he hates most in the world, in his mind it's the worst imaginable case of being cheated on, and he goes berserk. Add on finding out that one of his best friends / former crush also slept with the same dead, evil, soulless thing (an objectively accurate description), and he's definitely having an extremely bad day. So I get it. But damn, Xander, you left your fiancee at the altar. Get off your high horse dude.

This episode has never been a favourite of mine but I also don't hate it, I adore the willow and tara moments this episode their reunion is honestly one of my favourite scenes of theirs I also really love the Buffy and Dawn scenes in this episode I like seeing them just be sisters without all the demons and world ending stuff, while I don't love the anya and spike stuff I am not really that mad about it either it was clearly just comfort seeking for both of them and i think they probably wanted a dramatic way to out the buffy and spike relationship so i guess this is the way to do it.

Ha! You think 15 years of Supernatural led to inconsistent continuity? They were lightweights. Two words: 'UNIT dating' - the Doctor wants Sam and Dean to hold his/her Jelly Babies

I disagree with one part. He did try to talk to Anya, but she was extremely self centred and selfish. When she’s trying to get him to announce the engagement he tells her something along the lines of “let’s put the breaks on, marriage is a big step and I don’t want to rush, I want every step to be just right” her response to that is to tell him to grow up. marriage shouldn’t be about pressure, no one should feel pressured to announce their engagement right away or be married within a year. Most people are engaged for way longer than that but Anya was in a big rush for it all and yes I get she’s scared of her own mortality but let’s not forget that she’s so so much older than him

Eyebrow raise at "this isn't really his style" regarding Spike being blamed for the trios surveillance setup, he did literally commission one of the trio to make a buffy sex bot within the last year and did stalk Buffy a fair bit in general so I think Xander making that leap and buffy entertaining it isn't the most surprising.

Michael Matthews

Xander left Anya at the alter, humiliated her then when he see’s her and Spike together Storm’s off like a little bitch with a ax , they were over she can F anyone she wants, I really didn’t like xander this season it’s like they all forgot how Spike was helping them except for Tara and that’s what I love about her character

Stargazer1682

The *only* reason I would be skeptical of it being Spike, as he doesn't strike me as being technically savvy enough to do it himself. He did of course have a lackey film Buffy back in the day to study her fighting style, though I don't know that she ever knew this.

CrookedCat

he typed on a computer with one finger... but tbf he actually used a computer so ????

Dan

In case no-one's let Alley know yet - for the next Buffy episode (6x19) you should pay attention to the opening credits!

Stargazer1682

This episode is a like a... "quiet favorite" of mine. Like, I had to look up which episode it was, and a still from the episode jogged my memory. So it's not a must watch episode that comes to mind. I don't love it, I don't hate it, but there are many things I like. Them finding the camera's a great progression of the season long arc with the idiots. You gotta appreciate Jonathan's sass, making a comment like, "We'll be deader than an ex-girlfriend." Like, he's all out of fucks. But just everyone getting everything out in the open. I don't like Spike and Buffy, so I kind of celebrate the dumpster fire of just, Spike pines for and gets rebuffed by Buffy; and then the whole thing with Xander and Anya, then Anya and Spike commiserating, only to be caught on camera for all the Scoobies to see. I don't even care that it's a gut punch for Buffy or Xander; if anything it's probably the shock to both of their systems that they needed and at least with Xander what he deserves. I like that Dawn puts two and two together, but more importantly that she doesn't freak out on Buffy. I've watched this episode multiple times, but I've probably forgotten before how Dawn was going to react, because I 100% expected her to be upset; and I like that she's understanding with Buffy and doesn't judge her for it. I also overall like the Buffy/Dawn bonding this episode. On the flipside with all of this, this is arguably the episode that comes to mind - this, and the episode immediately after Hells Bells - where they kind of sweep the plot of Hells Bells under the rug, in favor of Xander jilting being solely motivated by his own selfish immaturity and realizing too late that he wasn't ready for it. Like they ignore that they went to the trouble of completely traumatizing Xander as a catalyst, playing on all of those fears that culminated in an experience of him probably killing Anya. I don't like defending Xander, it feels wrong and makes me feel dirty, but I will always hate that they made that a plot point in Hells Bells, only to just ignore it, like it didn't happen. It's fine for him to have other reasons, but why go to that trouble? Just make it his decision apropos of nothing else; and own it.

Rue

Right, but I think that's probably what she kinda means - if he wanted to surveill, he'd do it himself lol

SpikesEcho

He's hardly the person Xander hates most in this world. Just last episode he was empathizing with/feeling bad for Spike. Xanders problem his basing the value of the women in his life by the men they sleep with (the men who aren't him). It's fucked up.

SpikesEcho

Not to mention, it just doesn't make sense. He's in their world now/a part of things regularly. There's no need for him to surveill.

Martin Waits

That's a really good point about how they built up Xander's fears and then seemingly pushed them aside in a couple episodes.

Jon Dub

Whats fucked up is Spike, and anyone who sleeps with him. And yes, Xander is a hypocrite, because Anya has done fucked up stuff too, but that doesnt make him wrong about Spike. If my best friend started sleeping with an undead serial killer, who stalked them, and tried to kill them, I would have something to say....as any good friend would. And Buffy herself admits that she only slept with Spike because she was dealing with some dark shit, due to her ressurection, feeling disconnected from her family etc, her relationship with Spike throughout season 6 was toxic as fuck. Xander and Anya's was blissful in comparison, at least until he dumped her at the altar.

angelcakes

Halfrek's character is delightful. Perfect casting, perfect acting.

Jim Greer

I have no idea why someone as gorgeous as Anya would want a loser coward like Xander back .

Steven morgan

That’s one way to look at it, he’s always hated spike, yes he dumped her at the alter but he still loved her, it’s easy to dump on dander because he’s not perfect, nobody is

Henrik Holst

How would the way someone looks affect the way they feel about other people?

Cadaxa Chapman Ball

Agreed. Spike and Anya were both rejected, both basically single, and they did not hook up to hurt their respective exes. It was a very realistic hook up where two people took comfort in each other with no strings attached

Robert Westlund

Hey, I've been away for a bit. I can't find the download links for Buffy 6x18. Where are they hiding? I'm in the 3.0 "tier" if that makes a difference.
