Keith Szarabajka, man with the coolest voice in the business.

Angel is my favourite show ever because of how the writers/showrunners aren't afraid to take us somewhere uncomfortable. Alley is in for a ride!!!!!!

As already been mentioned in previous comments, that guy from the 1700s who was brought back at the end of the episode is Holtz the Vampire Hunter, his name was first dropped once or twice in season 2, long before we were finally introduced to the character in the season 3 opener, of course you’ll learn more about Holtz and his history with Angel and Darla as you proceed.

Ron Fehr

Apparently his real voice is somewhat different than the voice of Holtz.

When Angel slept with Darla he wasn’t trying to loose his soul. It was just bit of misdirection from the writers playing with parallel imagery. And also a bit of confusing writing and retconning that they are often culpable on this show. Like equating Angel having sex with him losing his soul. In episode 7 of last season “Darla” it was revealed that Angel resumed his relationship with Darla after the curse, so they presumably had sex without triggering any soul removal. Also in “Epiphany” Angel himself clarified that sleeping with Darla was an act of total despair, the exact of opposite of what happened with Buffy.

It's at least very similar to the voice he used in Star Trek Enterprise. When I saw the Ent episode for the first time, I immediately recognized him as Holtz from his voice alone.

Carmen

I would argue he wasn't not trying to lose his soul either.

SpikesEcho

Hmmm, I definitely think he was trying to lose his soul and cross into a place of no return. As you said, he was in total despair. That seemed pretty clear to me, especially considering his shock that it didn't happen. Angel, however, has never quite understood the ins and outs of his curse (none of us have lol, even the writers) and has long considered it associated with sex (they repeat this over and over in the show) despite also understanding it to be about happiness. He was definitely banking on losing his soul after having sex, completing his self destruction.

Idran

I mean, they do repeat it as associated with sex over and over in Angel, yeah, but basically every single time they do, someone (usually Wesley or Angel himself) corrects whoever does so that it's not about sex. I actually can't think of any times Angel did think it was specifically associated with sex? I really don't think he was trying to lose his soul; I agree with Carmen that his soul had nothing at all to do with what he was doing, he was neither trying to lose it nor trying to keep it. It was irrelevant to his motivations at that point. I think he was at rock bottom, basically an emotional void, and looking for literally anything that could break through the anhedonic wall that is intense depression and pull him out of that. At first it was taking out his anger and frustration on Darla through violence, and then in the moment it turned into sex and he kept rolling with that with exactly the same motivation as the violence.

Jeff Cornell

The way the curse is discussed pre-Darla, it's clear that everyone considers sex off-limits for Angel, as it's too risky to gamble that that's *not* what the curse is. The only suggestion otherwise that I can think of is Wesley's "you know, this curse has been widely misinterpreted" when he's coming up with an excuse to sleep with Virginia while posing as Angel. I don't think Angel was deliberately trying to lose his soul, but I think he fully expected that he would, and he just didn't care. Hence "perfect despair".

bing.E

In my opinion, he was desperate and willing to chance it, though, Im sure he knew it wouldn’t make him achieve perfect happiness and I don’t think sex is the actual trigger but I think he wanted relief so badly that he thought maybe that relief would trigger something potentially so yeah I think he was willing to take a chance but was pretty sure that wouldn’t happen. Either way, it isn’t too heroic.

Mary Kate

I get what you mean about taking a badass female character and then making her pregnant. In general I detest "pregnant against her will" plotlines. Mystical pregnancies, also not my fave! That being said, Angel Season 3 is a good season of Angel and I like where the show heads from here.

Gregor

It is funny. Most people who watch Angel the first time seem to forget that they saw Holtz in the Season 3 Premiere.

Stewiebro

Not gonna give anything away but I remember thinking they were gonna play with the whole angel cordy getting together at some point I noticed them hinting at it in season 2 but I remember immediately when season 3 started it was really noticeable right away I'm a little surprised that you haven't mentioned it until they brought it up in this episode. I'll just say your definitely in for some strange and crazy shit the rest of this season and the next, not saying that in a good or bad way I'm just still amazed this show did half the stuff it did around this time.

Ron Fehr

With them spending that much time together, right from the start of the show, something was bound to happen eventually.

Dusty

Welcome to the Weird....

They have actually been setting up Holtz, the great vampire hunter, all the way back in season 2 they mention him (we don’t see him though) and then he was in the Season 3 premiere. So it’s been something that the show has has brewing for a while.
