2x02: "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been"

Next: Buffy 5x03

We got a new officeee for Angel Investigations!!! Who knew it would be a hotel from Angel's past where a demon was keeping a woman captive since the 50's so he could feed on her..... 🤨yo WHAT?!

I am still so sad for Judy 😭 I hate it here..

anywayss, hope you all enjoy this one! curious if this is the episode that many people thought was going to be 2x01? haha, bc I really loved it so much. all the commentary on real issues as well as great background for Angel and set up for the new office.. it just worked so nicely for me :)

Me, @ my intrusive thoughts every second of every day: Ah yes, a paranoia demon. I am quite familiar. Anyway, I always loved this episode, even when I was 12 and didn't entirely understand what was happening. It was the first time I remembered a character voicing the questions I lived with from the time my mother told me I wasn't black or white. Being two things at once also has the unfortunate consequence of denying you from being either and the more I passed as one, the more I worked to contain the ways I identified with the other. That teetering feeling is something I felt through most of my life. Sometimes, I still feel it. I don't think I ever blamed Judy for what she did despite feeling betrayed, even the first time I saw this, because I identified with her in a way I shouldn't have to at 12. It broke my heart the moment she shouted "It was him!" and shrank in on herself as they went after Angel because I think I would've done the same thing. I think that was the first time I called Angel my favorite show.

This is my FAVORITE episode of Angel. It really serves as a deep character analysis into Angel and part of why he is the way he is. It shows that even though he wants to be good and do good he is still an extremely flawed character and that he doesn't have to be Angelus to do terrible things. While it also seems like a complete stand alone episode the foreshadowing of the themes to come that the season tackles with are also present giving the episode a whole new dimension in the context of the season. Whenever I do my rewatches, I usually skip S2EP1 and start right here. I feel like this episode is where Angel really begins, where it figures out the what and how of the story it is going to try and tell this season and over the next few. NO SPOILERS :) This is when Angel finally works. There are a lot of people that start to watch season 1 and can never get through it, I think it's mostly because it's such a long set up. Angel is still trying to get it's footing in season 1 but it's clear from this point on it knows what it wants to say. I'm glad you liked it!
