what does the glowing side of the portal apparatus feel like when touched? that may be very unpleasant. I also think a vertical slice of reality may be a single atom thick and could effectively be the sharpest object possible. Hmm, maybe safeties were built in at the time of design.

Yeah, I was thinking a lot about this, but honestly I am choosing to ignore it just like Portal devs ignored it and let the player stand on the edge. As for possible explanations - there could be a gravity distortion near the edges of the portals - the closer to the edge the stronger it would be. The distortion could be shaped in such a way that it would basically deflect anything that came too close to the edge - essentially acting like a repulsing force on which someone could possibly stand even, although I'd imagine that would be extremely slippery and unstable. This could also explain the funnel effect that does happen in the game - the one that directs objects to fall through the center of the Portal, although in-game that effect is extremely strong and extends very far.

Gravity distortions may act like magnets but with 2 like polls. That would be slippery and unstable like you said... or in a very small hole could pressure what was inside on all sides equally. You could effectively use it to maturbate in theory. So this video, both the portal hole and the girl could be helping this guy out.

Yep, depending on how far the field extends and what is it's gradient (could extend far and rise in strength gradually or extend very little but rise in strength very quickly). Oh and of course by gravity distortion I also mean spacetime distortion as that's essentially the same thing. And seeing as portals are already basically distortions of spacetime it's not that far fetched to assume the distortion could extends beyond the 'event horizon' of the portal itself. Although spacetime tunnels like that in real life would be spherical - like in the movie Interstellar. So you know, a bit of suspension of disbelief is required xD

uhh, space time distortion and event horizons also have this rather troublesome side problem called spaghettification. Where time affects an object differently based on distance, but that gradient can be very small. This would mean that the guys dick would be passing through time very differently on the surface than the inside... That would be bad. I am going back to the gravity magnet repulsion theory on a level that could lead to pleasant results. I like that theory best. That or any object would deflect off the space time like a spongy wall, effectively the same thing.

Well spaghettification is related to black holes where both the strength of spacetime distortion and the gradients are usually insane. It wouldn't have to be nearly as bad in this case. And as I've said Gravity IS the curvature of spacetime so these terms are interchangeable, although the latter is more precise. And me mentioning an event horizon might've not been the best word to use - what I've meant was the portal's 'aperture', as in the boundary of it's opening, it's surface.
