Noah poured over his grimoire. He had absolutely no idea how long Zath would be distracted outside, and he couldn’t afford to waste a single second. Fog still clouded his mind from his death, but even if he couldn’t actually make the Rank 4 Mind Rune yet, he could still figure out the exact strategy he could follow and then take care of the actual creation when he got access to his mind back.

The entire idea of a Mind Rune was still revulsive to him. Everything about the way Wizen’s magic worked made Noah wish the man had never existed. From what he’d done to Alexandra to his involvement with the events that had brought Noah, Lee, and Moxie to the Damned Plains, it seemed that every single action that Wizen took was vile.

But going up against a Mind Rune user without a way to deal with their runes was just too dangerous, especially after Noah had seen how strong Wizen was the last time they’d met.

It wasn’t even just about protecting his mind from Wizen. From what he knew, Mind Runes generally couldn’t just wrest control of someone’s body instantly. Wizen had needed time to completely take control of Alexandra’s body.

In addition to a way to protect himself if Wizen did have a method to quickly take over his body, Noah also needed one to sever the man’s connection to any of the people he’d controlled — and the best way to do that was probably fighting with fire.

Unfortunately, that left him with no choice. He needed a Mind Rune if he wanted to maximize his chances of coming out ahead against Wizen. And if he wanted it to fit into his other Runes and not be a wasted effort, it had to be related to a disaster.

The mere idea for the concept was already frustrating. Disasters were mass-scale events, while almost everything he initially came up with relation to a rune was focused on a single person.

That wasn’t even to mention the fact that just about every concept that Noah could come up with for a Mind Rune made him want to throw up. The exact purpose of a rune had an immense effect on what its actual abilities would be — and he really didn’t want to be running around with a Dementia Rune.

But time slipped by. Zath’s distraction, which Noah had expected to be measured minutes at the best, stretched into hours. That somehow managed to make things even more difficult. The longer that Zath remained outside speaking with an invisible, completely intangible entity, the more concerned with the situation Noah got.

This wasn’t just some incident of a powerful person being mildly off their rocker. Every single Rank 6 that Noah had met, much less Rank 7, had been borderline insane. In Jalen’s case, he’d just been straight up insane. But their insanity was a haze through which they saw the world. The damage of years on the psyche when it was forced to witness aspects of humanity’s worst on repeat.

It was the type of damage that made someone think that getting mouthed off to by someone they were about to kill was funny and entertaining. It was not the type of insanity that made someone sit and talk to something that did not exist for hours on end.

And that could mean only one thing.

The entity to which Zath was talking existed.

Not only did it exist, but it was sapient. Something that Noah could not see, hear, touch, or otherwise make out, had been traveling with him and was somehow tied to the book that laid on the table before him.

Calling the situation unnerving would have been an understatement. Part of Noah wanted to pelt the grimoire into a fire just to see what would happen, but he couldn’t indulge his confusion or fears. He had too much at stake.

Even if he’d been traveling with the incarnation of evil itself, Noah needed the time. Every minute that passed was a minute that brought him closer to being able to use his magic and form a new Rank 4 Rune.

And so he did the favorite activity of every politician, king, and other official that had ever taken any form of power. He entirely ignored the problem to focus on his own gains and hoped that nothing would go drastically wrong as a result of it.

First, Noah worked on expanding his idea of what possible disasters could actually be made with a Mind Rune. Hysteria came to mind. It would work — but it definitely felt like it was crossing the boundaries of what kind of magic he actually wanted to be casting. There was a difference between killing and ripping someone’s mind from them.

A more promising idea followed a few minutes later. Devotion. That felt a little bit less… evil. Drawing power from people’s belief in him sounded promising. It wasn’t completely evil, and it wouldn’t involve forcing anyone to do anything.

There were just two problems with the idea.

The first was that Noah didn’t actually have that many people that believed in his strength. Even if he counted everyone that had ever heard of and feared Spider, the rune probably wouldn’t be able to gather any truly significant strength from a few hundred demons and a dozen or so humans.

Perhaps that could have been something he could have worked around if it weren’t for a slightly more significant issue.

There was absolutely no way a Rank 4 rune would be strong enough to draw power from other people’s devotion. Not only did it feel like far too powerful of a concept for a Rank 4, but it was also just completely impossible by the restrictions of Runes themselves.

Rank 4 unlocked a magical domain — a zone that increased perception and allowed him to snuff out other, weaker magic.

Rank 5 allowed him to manifest his magic within that domain from pure energy, rather than having to use something that already existed in world around him.

Rank 6… well, Noah wasn’t entirely sure what Rank 6 actually did. He’d never had a chance to really grill Jalen on it. When he made it out of the Damned Plains, it would go up in his priority list.

Either way, it didn’t matter. Drawing on Devotion would only work if people were within the range of his rune, which definitely wouldn’t be much farther than his domain. Maybe it would become possible at Rank 5 or 6, but it just wasn’t realistic yet.

And so his search continued.

Ideas came and went. Noah came up with constituent Runes such as Mental Barrier for Rank 2 and Strong Will for Rank 3, but his real goal was a Rank 4 Rune that could actually work as a disaster.

His frustration steadily built. Making any form of disaster based on Mind Runes was like trying to make a toy from pipe bombs. There was a chance it could look good from the outside, but it would probably blow up the moment someone touched it.

Hours continued to slip by. The fog in his mind peeled back like the skin of an orange if it had been stuffed into the hands of an unruly child. Namely, it came away in uneven chunks and pieces.

And as the fog went, Noah’s thoughts grew sharper. His ideas became better — closer to what he needed. Closer to something that would let him go to sleep at night without feeling like he’d become Wizen in the pursuit of defeating him.

And then the fog was gone.

Control of his mind returned to him in its entirety. Noah felt the moment as if a jolt of lightning had struck his chest. Rivers of electricity coursed out from his heart and ripped into his limbs in a split second. He leapt, tripping over his own legs, and fell out of the bed face-first.

Noah’s body sprung into motion. He caught himself, vaulting off his hands and landing easily on his feet. Moxie stared at him from where she sat on her chair, the formerly bored expression on her face evaporating in a mixture of amusement and concern.

“Getting some exercise in after sitting for too long?”

“My power is back,” Noah said, looking down at his hands. The Rune of Self had re-activated. He’d almost forgotten just how intense the rune was. Every single part of his body was his once more.

And every part included his mind. Moxie said something else, but Noah didn’t hear it. The thoughts that had been floating around in his addled skull finally clicked. They snapped together and finished the puzzle that he’d been unknowingly working on.

He knew what kind of Rune he could make. One that would let him fight back against Wizen. One that would let him keep who he was.

It was a concept that he was familiar with.

Very familiar with.

A smile pulled across Noah’s lips.

“Sorry, Moxie,” he said. “I zoned out for a moment.”

“It’s fine. You’ve got a… look on your face.”

Noah wasn’t surprised. He’d finished the hard part. The rune may as well have already been there in his mind, waiting in anticipation of for its own creation.

All he had to do was make it before Zath remembered the reason why he’d sought Noah out in the first place.

Cliffhangers are evil

Memes. The answer is memes.

Rovelt Nichols

How is devotion a natural disaster?

Marian Ch

There's no small amount of mental gymnastics in attempting to make his way around 'evil' ways to use a mind rune, all while forgetting that a tool is neither good nor bad, it's just a tool, and one's usage determines how the results are painted. Anyway, lacking knowledge of psionic storms, the ability to impose the crushing feeling of waiting in the line would be a way to go.

Cliffhanger rune. It was always there but he just didn't realise it.

Boredom rune. The Monday blues

Aaron Martinez

I don't know, cursing someone with dementia or depression is bad in a way that killing them isn't. Attacking the mind is always a step worse than attacking the body.

Monadologist

Rune of Boredom. I mean, how long was he in that line? During which time he just sort of muddled along, shuffling steps, never talking to anyone, never even wanting to.

Rune of ADHD go!

Jonathan Crandall

It's definitely a rune that has to do with staring into infinity. I strongly feel he's going to relate it to the millenia he spent doing nothing but walking

Alexander Dupree

A magical tool that only peels the skin from humans has very few ways to be anything other than evil. This isn’t like physical tools though that problem is present there as well. Intent defines how the rune is created and what it does. If he doesn’t make it perfect and have all the parts focused on its purpose he’s going to have an even harder time. So since he doesn’t want to waste it he has to come up with an intent that is neutral/good and has a usable function.

Didn't get say last chapter that the Rune would be based off the line? I feel like this chapter just went back and came to the same conc

Breakdown of Monotony? Something to do with the line and how it numbed all thought, how it numbed everything but one foot in front of the other?

Alexander Dupree

Holy wars, mass suicides, systematic exploitation of blind faith. I don’t know if devotion fit really and that’s probably why he didn’t go with it. I could see fitting it in when he creates a rank 5 rune by empowering the awe inspired by seeing a disaster happen. But that doesn’t seem like a strong connection.

Tommy

Meh since he was JUST talking about having brain fog due to rebirth I am going to go with a brain fog rune. Tbh I reckon Noah would be better if he stopped limiting himself by thinking a disaster has to be some big thing in a certain way. Something can be a disaster but have specificity and depth, not be wide ranging. Death of a loved one is a disaster to those who loved the person for example. I think a mind-slice rune would be good. He can slice wizens connection to people. And as a disaster he can cut people’s minds in half like with sunder - but of the mind

Alexander Dupree

Oh no. Though that’s a super scary power to imagine. Control over the aspect of cultures which defines membership in that culture.

Screechy

Rune of waiting/boredom/something related to The Line™️

mind fog rune ?

Rovelt Nichols

Yes religion bad. Understood, however all of those events were caused by men not nature. (Syntax)

jayu

Yes a memetic rune would be catastrophic

Rovelt Nichols

Essentially no connection to a natural disaster I can see. Just seemed random to me. I also agree, a shock and awe debuff effect makes alot of sense.

Thedevilsdemon

When i think about mind disaster, i cant help but to think of mass hysteria

SilasDrekken

He’s restricting himself unnecessarily. You have a ton of rune slots, you don’t need the mind rune to be disaster themed. Have we forgotten the book can move rune energies around to different runes? If he wanted he could be rank 5 in a few days by charging his new runes in the book . Making a mind rune for utility is no great inconvenience. Lots of people go around with unnecessary wind runes so they can use flying swords. Utility is useful. Nor do you need it to be evil. There are plenty of positive mind themed runes I can think of that will still give you the tools you need because they have general mind runes in them. The same way natural disaster can be used as a vibration rune because it has those in it. Mind palace, mind fortress, inspiration, muse, alacrity of thought, elasticity of thought, spark of genius, invention, imparting wisdom, Ect, Ect. Plenty of positive mind runes. He’s a musician and music teacher so something centered around inspiration, muses, and creativity is right up his alley. There’s probably a bunch of teaching related runes that would be mostly mind runes, and they could probably rid him of his dependence on mind meld potions too.

Alexander Dupree

I wasn’t trying to say bad or good just trying to point out the possible ways it could be a disaster. I think natural gets ambiguous when you’re talking about people organizing in groups. Are people naturally going to commit themselves to groups or not? Where does the line go if you could take away all the technology and still have people organizing into religious communities or something similar? I still agree the rune isn’t really a natural disaster though.

Damian Czeszek

The thing is that in runes the most important element is the intent. If he wants to keep using Disasters as a theme, he has to make a mind disaster, otherwise it will be impossible to fuse it into Rank 5 Disaster. The flawless Rank 5 Rune will also grow his soul significantly better than randomly cobbled together rank 5, especially since it's clear that your rank is actually less important than the actual strength of your runes. Noah killed opponents above him in ranks plenty of times thanks to the fact that his runes were perfect/flawless. Keeping an unrelated mind rune he can't fuse with disasters is also stupid, since it's not like Wizen is the only mind mage to ever exist. And if he makes a rank 4 mind protection and then advances to rank 5 later, then the mind protection rune will be pretty much useless and he would have to make an unrelated rank 5 mind protection rune later. It would just be delaying the problem, not really solving it. And he does kind of need to keep the mind rune evil, since it is supposed to be a disaster. If hysteria and dementia runes are off the table, maybe he will make a Rank 5 Depression Rune lol.

Kat ly

Widen with dementia will probably destroy both plains.

Kitti Lumpo

we eagerly await noah's solution tot he mind-rune problem~!

SilasDrekken

At the end of the day his disaster rune is useless. I say this because he only uses it to beat jobbers. Against any real opponents his disaster rune is just a battery for Sunder to win, and ANY perfect/flawless rune could be just as effective a battery for Sunder. He has several rank 5 mind runes. It would be in his best interest to consolidate them into a single rank 5 flawless mind rune. Fuck disasters, leave them on the back burner for now. A flawless rank 5 will allow for much more powerful sunders and will be key against Wizen.

Axelios

This was strongly hinted at a couple chapters back, and this chapter reads like that was forgotten

Actus

A rank 5 rune is completely useless to him, he’s a rank 4 and cannot use a rank 5 yet.

Andrei

Isn't that kinda a moot statement though? He has enough runes to be Rank 5 in a couple of hours with all flawless runes

Sunshine Marie

Lmao it's gonna be a rune about waiting in the long line of the afterlife 🤣

Actus

If he was just slamming runes together yeah, but that rank 5 would be unlikely to be flawless unless he was able to make other disaster runes. Otherwise the themes of the rank 4s would be clashing and even if they were all flawless, the rank 5 would be poorly made

Dax

He doesnt need to use his Disaster Runes in the combination. He can make an entirely unrelated Rank 5, thus pushing him to rank 5 before he upgrades his disaster related runes to that rank. He doesnt need to keep the mind rune, or have it be a part of his future build. He is falling into the same trap that everyone else is actually stuck in. But he isn't limited in that way. He can mix and match and swap runes in and out of his deck like he's playing a trading card game. He *can* and *should* make that Bath rune that was joked about all those hundreds of chapters ago. Now that he has infinite Catchpaper, he has a significant advantage that he's just leaving on the table. He can have a library of runes of all kinds, which he can hotswap as needed for any given situation.

Actus

This isn’t wrong, but don’t forget that swapping runes does a lot of soul damage. He does not have enough runes to make multiple rank 5s, though he could possibly try to make a rank 5 mind rune. However, that would be problematic as his keystone rune would not be in the combination. Given what we know of the importance keystone runes right now, forcing a rank 5 mind rune into his head and destabilizing his soul would probably not be the best move. There’s a time when he can spam out/ swap runes, but he’s not there yet. Even with the fragment to heal the soul damage, ripping a rank 5 rune out of his soul would be an enormous amount of soul damage and possibly knock him into another coma. Noah can’t just start flinging things together and praying, as the damage undoing the mistakes would cause would basically cripple him

Sean Andrews

Can anyone tell me where I can pick up where book 3 left of? They were fighting a rock snake.

Jeremy M

I'm curious. If the thought of a mind rune is that abhorrent to him, why not make the rune he desperately needs of mind shield, or rune of mental gymnastic bullshittery, and then break it down after Wizen has been dealt with and continue along with his disaster theme? His soul could absolute take it, especially with Renewal, right?

khielira

You do know there are other people that use Mind Runes. I bet some powerful people have Mind Runes user strong enough to pull the secrets from who they interrogate and Noah has secrets that must stay secret.

Jeremy M

You know, that is actually a very valid point! Thank you for that and now that viewpoint has been presented, my vote is totally on mental gymnastic bullshittery!

Marian Ch

Plus he needs a balanced choice of T4 runes to start working towards a singular T5 rune, so might as well make something good from the start if he puts the effort in.
