Yatora's whole character is thinking and that comes from him being so good at the other subjects. With the other subjects he is good at it requires that level of thinking to be good at, but with art you have the structure but it also needs the creativity which doesn't have a definite answer, compared to Math where the numbers have an exact value and with it you can find other exact or close to values. I think it is expressed great in the manga where it goes from him being "oh yeah I've been doing good after the bonds painting, I'll start with simple idea of mouths and shape." into "How did I make that bonds painting" in which I think helps better show that he got a bit scared and fell back on a formula
