There are things I understood almost at the beginning of the movie : Agier didn't die, Borden didn't kill anyone. There is stuff I understood along the way : it's another version of him who died, Root at first and then "one with the Machine". There are clues I had but didn't connect : I thought one Agier was Fallon and I also thought Borden had another version of him, but I didn't have that "one Borden" was Fallon. Because I didn't see the twin thing coming : for me, the Chinese scene was a clue to say Borden would do anything to have a final act, an act of life, but the message was more about playing an act all of your life to have that final act.

And there are things I understood only during the review and the editing. When Borden was saying he didn't know what knot he did for Agier's wife, he was sincere because each time Agier was asking the wrong twin. Cutter knew everything : he was the one who contacted Agier, who tested him for "having dirty hands" (for later doing that to Fallon), who told him to go to Tesla's exposition where Borden was on purpose (for Agier to believe Tesla was the key) etc. The metaphor with the bird is also, there from the beginning, and can work for both (Borden and Agier) : the one who dies on stage, in front of everyone, and the "brother" who survives.

I repeat what I said at the end : they both did terrible things, only to be at the end the best magician, to have their final act. Freddy did the wrong knot, Agier's wife died, Agier destroyed Alfred's fingers (so Freddy's also), so them and Cutter tortured Agier for entire years(the bird trap, the leg broken, the fake notebook). But Agier really comes back with the machine, he traps Borden with his fake death and Freddy is condemned to death. But Alfred can have the final revenge by surprising Agier.

Freddy killed Agier's wife and Sarah, Agier killed a lot of "himself". A lot of people were hurt here just for their ambition of having the final act, and the last word on this revenge story. Alfred, does he have it at the end ? Alfred doesn't have his twin anymore, but Agier could have created one of him "just in case"...
