These characters are awful, for sure. And yes, they are caricatures : the mom who just cares about herself while her dad is dying, the dad who had only his eyes on the money while the daughter had her eyes constantly on the mirror, and the son is stupid and dangerous, a bad mix. But the dying grandpa might be also a caricature : he's talking bad to his family, ok, but we can see that he also has a bad character with his doctor, and it's a pretty cruel game to play with them all.

You know you're dying, and you only want to spend time with these awful people, to punish them ? But at the same time, the smile he had on his face at the end proves that he died in peace, after saying the truth to all of them, being sure they won't enjoy his money so easily because he thinks they don't deserve it. The story is questioning the weird and bad subject of money into a family, heritages and hypocrisy around it, but also people who define themselves by their qualities when their defaults are more obvious.
