New video drop! "And Now For Something Completely Different" really is the moto for me writing 1FA episodes, and this one in particular is surprisingly wholesome compared to normal.

Going from irreverent comedies with heaps of jokes per minute to essentially a family kitchen table drama was very out of my comfort zone, and very challenging to pull off. Case in point: for a standard episode I'd usually have 2 or 3 versions to get it to finals; this episode took 7 completely different edits.

I hope people give this episode a chance, because I'd love it to pave the way for more narrative and world-building episodes in the future!

Although it's not my favorite this season, I actually liked a lot of little things about this: 1. A couple more minor friendship moments, such as when Evandra and Nixie think Mama is a threat to Mogdar and immediately drop into battle mode, and when Nixie is about to tell Mama that Modgar doesn't rage anymore, but when he just gives that sad little shake of his head, she backs off. Follows on similar moments in "Battle of the Bards" (Evandra and Nixie backing Antrius) and "Wild Magic Surge" (Antrius and Vlithryn doing their darnedest to help Nixie). 2. Nixie happily eating the stew and taking the peasant for the road; it could just be because she's insane, but I like the reminder that she's very much not human. 3. For some reason, the shot of Evandra and Mogdar simultaneously setting their weapons aside was really aesthetically pleasing. 4. Was the point about Mogdar killing an owlbear "when he was only three" a reference to "The Ballad of Davy Crockett"? If so, I love that. There were some odd notes, of course: 1. When Mogdar snaps the spoon at 3:35, are the spoon and his thumb CGIed? The CGI stew on the wall was weird too (if only because it seems like that would've been a golden opportunity for a complex practical workup), but the thumb and spoon are just head-scratchy. The Wonyo looks like he's got enough firepower in those guns to snap a wooden spoon on command. 2. I do wish the episodes with an absent main party member would explain WHY the main party member is absent—especially because we've had three in a row now. 3. For that matter, the last time we had the main trio and a guest party member all actively working together was...what, Mogdar's first appearance? Maybe "When the Cleric Chooses Violence", if you count Antrius as contributing there. Definitely not often enough. Big vote in favor of narrative/world-building episodes in the future!

Thanks for the detailed comment! Glad you liked all those little bits. You're right on the money for #4! Out of interest, what is your favourite episode this season? Addressing the other notes, #1 - the spoon snap was a directorial choice after the fact. Going back to shoot pickups was not possible because we'd need the actor, makeup, location, set dressing, lighting, crew, etc etc so it wasn't financially feasible but we wanted the story beat. We shot in a heritage listed location, so we weren't allowed to spill actual stew on the wall as the building is from the 1800s and we weren't allowed to use real liquids or fire. #2 - people miss D&D sessions all the time for whatever reason, and parties split/characters can be off doing random stuff too. #3 - The main reason is that having extra characters that don't do anything/forward the plot adds unnecessarily length to the episode which makes it more expensive to film. We'd either have to cut down how many episodes we do or the costs would blow out per episode. Essentially the episodes aim to be about 5 minutes which is the maximum amount we can film in one day at the quality we're used to shooting. Any longer means we need 2 days, which doubles all the costs. It's also not very engaging for the actors to be there as basically background extras with little to do or say. In the end, if we had more budget to shoot longer episodes, we could include more characters, but since we have time and budget limits we have to be smart about what we're including to get the most important story and character beats on the screen!
