One of the tough realities of school boards in our country is how the barrier of entry/election is SO low; it’s a job not too many people want to do! On top of that, school board members acquire a LOT of power relative to the ease of getting the gig.

So far, the worst of this stuff doesn't appear to be happening at the schools my kids go to, but it's very bad in the school system that I grew up going to, a couple towns over. The BOE is led by a husband and wife team who took power of the board during Covid running on an anti-masking/anti-vax platform. Now they're changing rules so that teachers are required to notify parents of any signs a student is trans. It's despicable stuff, they're fomenting "anxiety" amongst the dipwad parents who are already primed to believe their children are somehow being peer-pressured into being trans, and completely ignores the lived experiences of actual trans students who in some cases don't have safe and supportive households, and in general, are now being singled out as special cases, with particular rules that only govern them. And, to your point, I don't even understand the motivation, it's a super-conservative district, these people don't need to do these things to get reelected. Winning a BOE seat is not going to be that hard for them! But now they're getting invitations to appear on Newsmax and written about in the New York Post, because right-wingers see them as "taking on the governor". I find it disgusting.
