What year is this story set in?

As a fan of history I am curious about something in the story. Was the war that Mary played a part in their world's equivalent of the wars in The Balkans during the breakup of Yugoslavia? If not then is there an actual war that was being fought during that time that that aspect of the story was based on, or was it just a war in general? I know that this isn't an important part of the story, which I greatly enjoyed by the way, but given the vagueness of the time period in which this takes place I couldn't help but wonder. Thank you for the series, and I look forward to its next chapter.

You're correct! During the story development, Ryo actually planned that Mary did deployed during UN PKO mission in Yugoslavia, specifically UNPROFOR, she witnessed the Siege of Sarajevo. But we decided to keep the world setting fictional. Follow his twitter, he might share some of development materials that didn't came out to the finalised story.
