One can assume it has something to do with the plants him and Viktor were feeding Rio. Not sure if they were all natural, or some kind of pollution/mutation altered them.

I think the parallel between Viktor and Jayce that you talk about at 50:00 feels kinda off for me. I do agree that Viktor isn't satisfied being and assistant and he wants more, he has ambition but ambition of what? He doesn't want recognition as it was shown on EP4 ("Progress Day" I think it was call), with Jayce offering him to come with him to stage and he refusing. Viktor's ambition is to have the means to make his creations a reality, to have the time and resources to create. In retrospect I would guess that that 2nd episode quote "Do you think I wanted to be an assistant?" it's because as an assistant he had obligation that got in the way of his research "Police needs a scientist to check some crime scene? Oh, send Heimer's assistant!". In that sense I think both Jayce and Viktor have a similar ambition. Just as a little extra. I was thinking, back in EP 4, when Jayce and Viktor are showing their inventions to Heimer, the fact that Viktor decided to show the claw that comes out of his back and looks like and extra hand, it kinda shows how his inventions are an extension of himself, they are not just tools but a part of him. While Jayce on the other hand creates a gauntlet something that it's just a tool. I may be stretching that idea, but it was fun to think about it

I see! Well to me he very clearly does want recognition though - he powerfully expresses the need to leave a legacy, something that he wants people to remember him by. Those are more or less his exact words to Heimerdinger in the middle of reflecting on the horrific fate he has in store, and those are synonymous with recognition. That's just my reasoning and I personally don't see any holes or reaches there at all, so I'm a bit confused as to what feels off there. It's just expanding on what was said to us and incorporating prior information to substantiate. I think there’s a much greater chance of a clear connection between his words in episode 2 about wanting to be more than an assistant and his words to Heimerdinger in episode 6 about leaving a legacy then his line just being about that red tape - the show packs so much meaning into the tiniest details so I just think there you can look into lines like that to that extent, and nothing about that interpretation feels off at all to me. I don’t think him shying from the limelight in episode 4 is in any way contradictory or unnatural - it’s very possible for scientific minds and innovators to be recognized without them having been very public people. Work speaks for itself.
