When news of the DNA virus first hit everyone was a little skeptical, random unconfirmed reports of hippos appearing on the subway, a giraffe causing an emergency landing on a flight to Hawaii, various theater performances shut down as their cast all shrank down to mice in front of the audience.

Everyone was forced to stay inside as doctors and scientists attempted to pinpoint the cause of what was causing the shapeshift virus, which researchers tentatively named protein SH-1FT5. Dubbed by various news sources as "The Shifts".

The vernacular started to get around and everyone who had been going to parties early on were catching the "shifts" soon enough, only finding that their changes started taking effect slowly much later, making it difficult to discern when they had first been exposed, which made tracing back the source all but impossible.

Steve began that morning like any other, yawning loudly as he checked his phone, he'd been feeling a bit strange and got tested just to make sure. Sure enough, there was an email from the clinic on his phone, viral level in his blood had reached 9% confirmed.

That trip to the Zoo his buddies urged him to join them on last month just before lock downs hit may have been a big mistake.
