My approach to eye highlights, and what I look when paining them. The idea of this sheet is help understanding the highlights.

Basically I usually paint 3 highlights at 3 levels of depth inside the eye:

  • 1) Main highlight. literally the main light source reflection on the eye. Is always pointing at the direction of that source.
  • 2) Iris light. At the opposite side of the main highlight, and is over the iris surface.
  • 3) Pupil/Retina highlights. These are optional highlights but give extra depth and charm.

As a side note I've observed most manga-asian inspired styles use a similar approach to this one, specially the #1 and #2.

I will continue with a series of eye's topics posts for future journals.
