These are the main technical things I considered while making this illustration. I divided this in 4 aspects for explaining easier each:

Gesture. Action lines and others that help guide the eye through.
Balance. Trying to keep visual weight inside the frame. If only angled lines from one side where there it give the illusion of slopping or falling to one side.
Contrast. Played with the silhouette shapes; and the play between black and white values (brightness, shines and shadows play).
Palette. A simple split complementary palette, in the color wheel has an "Y" shape.

Steps. Last image is a step-process gif of the shading. At first it was intended a flat style, but at converting to more 3D-shading gave a lot of volume problems, so it was a mistake to start thinking in other style. In any case I used photoshop liquify and transform tools to play with proportions and fix  anatomy. Although started a little more in chibi proportions in the end decided to go with a more anthro look, to go better this more real shading style.
