I like making detailed hair, is very relaxing. So much I have to restrain myself not to make something too complex to match the rest of the overall body style lol. This is the hair technique and brush settings used with the Loona painting.

Process followed on the video (usually I just use a variation of this on others):

  • 1. Getting rough main values and solid geometric shapes (in this case with the help of "Shine" and "Mutliply" layers for lights and shadows) with a regular round brush.
  • 2. Using a Texturing brush (like the one below*) on a new layer to give individual strands of hairs.
  • 3. Use a Layer mask (or various) on this group to hide and refine the outside shape or to get background visible through some parts.
  • 4. Refine on a new layer over all others, add individual details and loose hairs/strands with a regular solid brush.

To replicate it you would need to create a new "Brush" tool, and adjust the settings to match these on the left (wish there was an easier way to share brushes from SAI2):
