There's much that could be said a lot about eyes, they are usually one of the most important aspects of a character drawing in my personal opinion and the most I enjoy to draw. But I will start some eyes posts and small tips with a general overview of the most usual shapes I tend to make.

Since I'm heavy on manga influences I use common established visual cues from this style. In this case a way to convey quickly a character personality can be done via their upper eyeliner shape (downward, normal (slightly curved down), upward).

Leaving aside expressions (which alter the shape) the above references are supposed to show a neutral stance on the character expression and shown his overall personality/archetype (shy, heroine, villain for example).

About the common associations listed on each type, it doesn't mean they will be show all in a character. There are other things that contribute to eyes and character emotions, but this is probably the most visible indicador. .

As always with my notes, take only what you find useful, not as a set of rules. Is useful to know the visual language behind art but I don't like to follow or encourage following strict rules or labels on art.
