As I think I have said I am not really a fan of Disney’s Hercules - that doesn’t mean I hate the movie by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I have actually come to enjoy the series that followed the movie.  I’ve seen the entire show on Disney+

I think the thing I enjoy the most is exactly the same as I enjoyed in the movie. It is the muses. They are beyond gorgeous. I always loved them - all of them in fact. But Calliope is my favorite, and she always will be. She is usually the center girl and the leader of the group.

From the left:

Terpsichore - probably the most difficult name 😂 but I sorta see her as the youngest of them all. She is the muse of Dance.

Melpomene - probably the most gorgeous hair 😊 the muse of tragedy. A little given, since she is the one to lead the song where Hercules story growing up human. Plus she holds the mask with the sad face.

Calliope - probably the prettiest and most easily recognizable 🥰 the muse of epic poetry. Not surprising as she is often the one leading the storytelling. I often saw her as the oldest of the group.

Clio - probably the bookworm 🤓 the muse of history. She makes sure you pronounce your words correctly, and if not, she is gonna wack you with her scroll!

Thalia - probably the funniest and most easygoing 😄 the muse of comedy. She has some attitude and I freaking love her.

A funny thing about the two muses of comedy and tragedy is that they aren’t necessarily counterparts - more like two sides of the same coin. The entertainment coin… or the education coin…

See comedy is said to have arisen as a part of the everyday life in the villages and small communities around the world as our species began to move around. Comedy was the climax of a feast or a party. Comedy is a way to relief stress and to - in a way - stop thinking about too serious things, and to concentrate on the things near you. The moment so to speak.

Tragedy is different, as it has come in a way to inspire and bring both hope and a wish for redemption. A tragedy was told to bring warning and to pass knowledge that all in life comes to an end. All tales of heroes are in a way tragic. Hercules, Achilles, Odysseus… A hero’s journey is a sad one, and will end in death… as to archive immortality and live on forever.

Comedy is about the moment, tragedy is about the eternal. Two sides of the same coin.

It’s actually not wrong that the muses are the ones singing the deeds of Hercules. That is pretty much how the legend is described. But that is pretty much the only thing that the movie got right.🤭 Everything else is pretty much laughably wrong.😂

In fact the muses are Hercules sisters. They are all daughters of Zeus. And also worth remembering, the correct number of muses are either 3 or 9. But I guess Disney couldn’t decide and chose a number in between and since Spice Girls were 5 I guess they decided to go all girl band. But 5 isn’t a bad number for the muses. In my opinion that is.

The Muses are clearly big fans of Hercules - sisters or not - and I always, as said, loved them as a child, and I still love them today. In a way they are like his cheer squad.

I hope you enjoy
Yours truly

Zeus, "Hercules! WHY ARE YOUR SISTERS PREGNANT!?" Hercules, "Hey, at least I didn't sleep with my own daughter." Zeus, "Comment is withdrawn and most importantly.... don't tell your mother."
