I don't know if you knew already or anyone has mentioned it but the characters Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) and Marie Laveau (Angela Basset) were based on real people. LaLaurie is particularly disturbing because she committed many of the atrocities depicted in the show. There's another character coming later who also was a based on a real person.
