It is always fun to see new people discover this masterpiece, glad you're enjoying the journey :) I like the first one more than this, nothing wrong with it but the adventurous feeling in the first is just so amazing. Third one is the best. Better hold on to that hope and the tissues, it is going to be one helluva ride. I haven't seen the theatrical versions since I watched them 20 years ago when they came out the first time in theaters so I can't remember what is in extended and what is not with few exceptions like the flashback with Faramir and Boromir in this one. To me the extended versions are the proper versions. They didn't cut these scenes because there was something wrong with them but because of the length of the movies, they didn't think audience would sit 4 hours in the theaters. Many of these scenes are now in the extended versions and they give a lot of important background on the characters.
