Hiya!

So I definitely just handed the computer on over to Allison and was like "do you want to write the blurb??" So that's her little interjection to our newest reaction to Stray Kids!

We're going in strong with two new bangers with Maniac and Miroh. And then we got a little something special going on here with Red Lights. I don't exactly know how to describe SKZ concept as a whole yet but I'm getting their vibes from all the main MV's we've watched. But Red Lights was a little bit more sexy sexy time with the chains and the suits and the dancing and literal red lights. And then after that we got an interview with the members!

Honestly though - can one of y'all give a run down on what Red Lights is about / art direction too? Is there a story behind it? Inquiring minds want to know ...

Also, I already lined up the 5-Star album listening party and so I'm going to try to get that in the lineup ASAP. And I guess their new comeback is around the corner so we'll try to brace ourselves for that too!

Enjoy the video!

Red lights....yeah. It's a lot. Stray Kids has never shied away from sexuality/sensuality and they're often cheeky about their responses to things. The director of the MV is Novvkim (Kim Hyun Jae-legal name) and they are openly queer. So SKZ got a lot of respect from the LGBTQIA+ community for working with them and being willing to approach what some would consider fringe topics within the idol community. The lyrics of red lights were written by Chan and Hyunjin -- they playfully claim that the other wrote the song when asked -- and it came from a place of them being obsessed with work and desiring a release from that. Or ya know...edging =P The video TO ME seems to represent the ever present obsession (be it passion, work, person, sex) that they can't get away from. It lives on their brain. It gives them breath to live, but also binds them to it so they can't break free. It's about coming to terms with the dark parts of yourself and making friends in a way so you can accept it, realize it's purpose, and hopefully approach it more healthily going forward. Also, the boys look fine af in that video and it's unfair. Again, this is my take on it. I've read and listened to a few interview and some Chan's room discussions about it, but it's been nearly 2 years ago for me, so I've forgotten some things.

I've said it before here and in messages but Miroh is my "get shiz done" song. That and Victory Song. They're my I NEED TO CLEAN THE OVEN AND I HATE IT song or the song you use to just get motivated to make progress. It lives on repeat on those kind of days =P I have a Hype playlist, and I think it's on there 4 or 5 times alone lol. I've never gotten tired of it.

I am terrible at SKZ recs because my answer would be "all the above" but maybe Levanter or Secret Secret for something a little different from what you've heard so far. Or maybe more Oddinary with Venom and Freeze (and Lonely St.). and you guys are just in time their new comeback is out at midnight this Friday!! OOOH there is also what I like to call the Your Eyes saga which is just watching the mv for Your Eyes then watching Stray Kids watch the Your Eyes mv

Red Lights is one of their songs, that can be interpreted in a few ways. They like to create songs that have more open interpretation, which is great. Chan and Hyunjin wrote it together over an arrangement Chan made. There was a special "Howl in Harmony" which goes through the whole process of them coming up with the song, and the theme. The other boys also created unit songs - Han, I.N. and Seugnmin "Gone Away", and Changbin, Lee Know, and Felix "Surfin'". You can find the videos on Youtube. Chan and Hyunjin themselves have expressed that they both tend to get obsessed with their work (Chan with producing, Hyunjin with dance) and will tirelessly practice and work over and over again until it's absolutely perfect, which it never is by their own standards. That's what the lyrics are actually talking about, even the Korean title 강박 means "Compulsion" like the compulsion to seek perfection. If you look at the lyrics: "I'm staying up all night again"- very literal that they loose sleep over work "Make you feel my love / You know I can't leavе you alone"- put so much effort and determination into their work and will repeat and repeat the process until satisfied. "No matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up / Until the moon falls asleep, even deeper"- they know it's not always the healthiest and can become obsessive but they sometimes can't stop they keep coming back to it day and night. The more obvious interpretation of sensuality / relationships, are what is expressed a bit more through the, in Hyunjin's words, "Hard sexy" mv and choreo. The lyrics fit so well into describing a toxic and obsessive relationship, which in my opinion makes the overall meaning of the song more powerful and relatable to more people. This interpretation is also easier to pick up on and understand, so its the one most people mainly notice from just the MV. That is why the MV is so good IMO, Chan and Hyunjin can be interpreted as the same person struggling internally which is why you see them looking the mirror and standing over each other when chained up. But they can also represent an actual relationship. Through the lyrics, Chan and Hyunjin wanted to show how a toxic relationship/compulsion with work can mirror that of an obsessive relationship with someone!

I know!! It's comeback season!! Looks like SKZ is winning in the album listening poll so we'll be most likely reacting to a bunch of songs soon! We're really excited about it :)

Oh wow. That's so interesting!! Hard sexy was definitely the vibes I was getting at first but it makes sense about how passionate they are about their work. I'll have to rewatch now with all that in mind!! Thanks so much for filling us in!
